My daily driver is a '93 900T with an automatic transmission. It is running Commemorative Edition spec parts--red box APC, 2.8 bar FPR, and 010 distributor. Also running a smaller restrictor in the wastegate barb on the APC solenoid to boost well into the red zone. Never had the car dynoed, but I'm figuring at least 190hp. That's fine for a commuter car. I'm running Amsoil Supershift in the transmission. No problems whatsoever with this setup for over 25K miles. My only issue with the autobox is the high revs at highway speeds (lower gas mileage as well). I think it's fragility is over exaggerated. At least as it compares to the SAAB manual trans. And especially at 200hp and below. I ran this same setup in my old daily driver for many more miles than this car--motor died from a failed oil pump, tranny still working beautifully.
I say you tweak the engine's performance and run a good (compatible) synthetic fluid in the transmission (Amsoil Supershift, BG Universal, etc.) and enjoy the car on a modest budget. If the tranny was weak to begin with and you end up killing it, then do a 5-speed swap. Or just look for a c900T with a 5-speed and swap the performance parts over. It will be cheaper in the long run.
Get a drop-in K&N (or equivalent) air filter too.
A better-flowing 2.5" (at least) performance exhaust makes any engine mods perform better as well.
Front-mount intercooler would be the next step. Then a larger compressor wheel on the turbo. It goes on and on once you get started...
