The bypass valve has a vacuum line going to it. THat line puts pressure or vacuum on the diaphram that either lifts or holds the valve closed. You can remove the line going to it and try to blow/suck air into it. IF you can, the diaphram obviously has a hole in it. I have had one that developed a small hole in the diaphram that actually sealed itself when the valve closed. Then, the valve would open partially until the diaphram flattened out and let air out the hole! The rubber diaphram folds over itself in the closed position and that sealed the hole. So blowing air into it is a quick check that works 95% of the time but to really know you'd need to attach a mity vac hand pump. I bought the forge aluminum unit and I'd recommend it to anyone. It's well worth $130 due to machined aluminum, no flimsy diaphram, and lifetime warranty. http://www.stratmosphere.com
