operation of the T-7 software or have any experience with it. Supposedly
the T-7 system controls torque, not boost. I have no idea how. I would
caution anyone not to make seemingly simple mods to the system.
Voltage dividers will tell the ECU that boost is lower than actual and will
lean out the mixture. Lean mixture can cause detonation. Detonation causes
holes in piston tops.
The T-5 system is more well understood buy more people. There are some mods
that are safer than others. Some are just s/w changes, others change hardware.
Abbott supplies a new wastegate actuator for the T-5 system, I don't know
about the T-7. For the T-5, the actuator spring has a larger force that
reguires more boost pressure to open the wastegate. It essentially raises
the base boost. Even in this "safe" mod has it's negative qualities. Raising
the base boost reduces the ECU's boost control. Say for instance that you
got a load of bad fuel and the motor started to knock. The ECU will reduce
boost until the knock stops. If the knock does not stop at the base boost
setting, the motor will continue to detonate. Damage can result.
A stock system has a base boost of around 5 psi. The Abbott supplied
wastegate actuator results in the base boost being almost 10psi. Abbott's
ECU s/w compensates by changing the fuel and timing maps appropriately for
these higher pressures, but it is not as "safe" as a stock ECU.
By the way, voltage dividers are not even a good idea for a T-5 motor.
My advice, be very, very cautious comtemplating mods to T-7 motors.
