Up in the higher altitudes the turbo has to work harder to produce the same amount of boost. Doing so for long periods of time will certainly cause excess heat, which could in theory cause engine damage. I would expect modern engine management would take care of this, but who knows...

My '80 900T blew a head gasket going through the sierras due to boost creep - climbing tall hills with nothing but a small wastegate eventually caused boost to creep to 15psi (from a stock max of 10), which was enough to blow out the gasket around the #4 cylinder. Of course, that's a b-motor with 200k+ and only a mechanical wastegate and no way for the engine management to affect it, but this sorta thing can certainly happen on a modern car - just more difficult.
