I'm told 95 RON is nearer to 87 AON. There's no direct comparison since AON is calculated from two different properties, RON and MON. In Europe, MON is disregarded. Two fuels with the same RON rating might have different MON ratings and therefore have different US equivalents. MON measures the fuels tendency to knock under high speed and load, where RON concerns knock under low speed and load.
I made the same mistake when I first started frequenting SaabNet.
As for water, although it's non-combustible, it is used in water-injection systems to reduce knock, so if it *did* have an octane rating, would it be higher than petrol (sorry, gasoline)? :)
