Such as 5th to 3rd drop downs on the highway. People kinda freak out when they see your wheels cut loose at 60 mph on the highway. As Kevin says, 3rd is under the moost boost load (makes sense, if you have higher boost beginning in 3rd, like I do). 1st and 2nd get about 12 - 15 psi, whereas 3rd can support 20+ every time. You saw the pics of my third gear. It just happens, eventually.

I also did 4 sanctioned drag races (total of about 14 passes, with 4k clutch dumps each time, and one burnout), 3 sanctioned autocrosses (but no thrid gear use in any of them), and a ton of street/highway racing. When I got my car, I did not think the previous owners took the best care of it. We did a top end rebuild and decided to stick with the tranny on there (shifted fine for 10K miles). I'm hoping for another 80K or so on this box, but without the drag racing. If you're the original owner, then you know how you've driven and maintained the car.

There is no reason to be changing your transmission oil that often. It is not subjected to the severe heat like engine oil is, so it does not break down. I'd say every 30K (and that's too often in my book) is good for a tranny oil swap.

The Saab 5 spd we have now I believe dates to 1969 or something (heard that somewhere on here a while back). Fifth gear was basically tacked on to the end of this box (it is WAY far out from the other gears). The case is not steel either, and is prone to cracking under heavy torque loads.

My transmission felt perfectly fine until Thanksgiving Day when it took a crap on me 200+ miles from home. No pinion whine or anything. It happens.
