I noticed that the shifter is pretty damned vague in the Saab compared to my Nissan's. (I'm trying to not be rude in describing what I think of the Saab shifter ;-) )
I wonder if the sloppy engagement is helping to cause failure? (Aside from the pinion issue that is) I've noticed a lot of times I'm not fully in gear and when I let the clutch out I can feel the shifter kinda "clunk" in as I'm actually forcing it to go. This is due to the slop in my case.
In the FWD turbo 4 cyl Nissan world third gear is supposed to be a curse over 300hp/275tq. However I an several others with over 350whp have gone for loooong periods of abuse with no failure while others are on their 5th and 6th transmissions. The only thing in common for those of us who's trans have lived is we shift fast but we also makes sure the car is fully in gear, no powershifting, and the clutch is always fully depressed when making the shift. We also all run thicker fluid.
