Precisely. If I lived where I encountered snow on a daily basis in the winter, then I'd go for an excellent snow tire. But the reality is, in the winter, I still drive on mostly clear pavement. If there is snow, it usually gets cleared relatively quickly. So I sought out a tire that was compatible with what I drive. Also many snow tires have a really good snow/ice compound on top, which then wears away to an all season compound. Drive this on a clear highway road, on say a 4 hour one way trip to go skiing, and the tires are toast, and you've just wasted a lot of money on good snow tires. The Michelins provide good snow traction if required, but are biased towards clear pavement. And they come in good low profile sizes to accommodate many of the higher end European sport sedans which need big wheels to go around big brakes.
