I've always used snow tires in MA. Snow removal is like you described. Quick and lots of salt! In the winter time the roads are probably 95% dry. It's when the other 5% hits, that the snow tires really pay off.
I probably drive about 6000 miles with the winter tires on.
I've run Hakka snows for 5 seasons now and the fronts are about 3/4 to the wear marks! The rears are only down about a 1/2!
So, I really cannot see how driving on dry pavement wears them down faster. How much longer would you want them to last?
