Karl, any idea offhand how much Maptun are charging for the intercooler (in Kr, I can convert to £)? I'd just like an indication of how much I'd need to spend.
While opinions vary as to transmission losses, the company that we were using measures the transmission loss during "coast-down" of the rollers and bases their flywheel hp estimate on that. I can't remember offhand the whp on the previous 305hp/5500rpm run, but on Saturday's 298hp/5600rpm run, I saw 239 on the display for whp. That is probably a better figure for comparison. Alan's was 249, but at least I don't expect my engine to blow up at any minute ;)
I know that equates to around 20% loss when people here reckon about 16%, but I could see on the computer display that the losses measured at high speed were much larger (as a percentage of the power output at that speed) than those at lower speeds. i.e. the losses rose rather faster than the power output.
My torque curve is very much fatter than Alan's and makes the 298hp Subaru we tested against look very feeble indeed. I do like to use that torque, though, and I told Johnny that I was budgeting for a gearbox replacement sometime in the future, so I wasn't too worried about transmission stress. I also asked for no boost limit in 2nd gear, as a lot of my driving is below 70mph and I wanted maximum acceleration in the 30-70 range. I'm certain it is that torque curve that makes my car so fast. At a track day last week, it was faster round the circuit than the Ferraris (could be down to driver, but I'm not that good as it was only my second track day) and was passing the TVR Chimeras as though they were standing still (seriously!).
No clutch slip problems yet, with about 35K miles on the current clutch and about 15K miles of that with the new ECU. Alan is experiencing clutch slip on an almost-new clutch. Perhaps it isn't bedded in properly, but the Dawes Gadget he has fitted does seem to spike a bit. Even with that, he isn't getting anywhere near the aggressive torque curve I have.
But I want more :)
Apart from the obvious reliability benefit, what performance benefit do you think I'll see with the KJ intercooler on its own? I assume I can't squeeze any more power out of the engine without bigger injectors, since although I'm running 12.5:1 A/F at peak power, the CO is starting to come down a bit and I believe that means I'm at the limit of the fuel system.
