Well, Happy New Year everyone! I spent the holidays in Hong Kong, with a couple of days in Shanghai. There are lots and lots of Skylines in HK, I was in heaven! Also many Lancer Evolutions, which was very cool. Saw my first R32s (in Edwardian Grey metallic!! :) ) and Evo VIIs. The latter are MUCH wider looking than in photos, they are very cool.
Anyway, straight back to tuning today with the local EFI guru. The wideband went in and off we went. Immediately noticed that I was idling quite rich, but the rest of the map is quite nice. However, rampant boost - overboost. The boost won't stop, and consequently, we couldn't do too much WOT tuning. Likely culprit is the wastegate actuator rod, so I'll be playing with this tomorrow. Again, I am loving the flexibility of the SDS. Want more timing here? Done. More fuel here? Done. Need to kill the detonation? Dial in timing retard when it detects knock. Too cool.
All of this is on the best available pump fuel locally, 92 octane. My EFI guy burns Cyclone chips for many customers in the US, and has noticed that he has to dial back timing 2,3 even 4 degrees with our relatively crappy Canadian fuel. However, sooner or later I'll get it on a dyno with C16 race gas and the motor should put out quite nicely.
So, next will be to sort out the boost control. Hopefully there is no issue with the GReddy Profec-B. I picked it up second hand. Hoping the issues with the overboost are due to the rod being out of whack.
Meantime, here's a photo of my 99 at the rallycross before Christmas, it appeared on the local riceboy forum. Person in the passenger seat is my mate Jeff Smith, who works at the local import wreckers and accomplished ice racer, tagging along for my first run that day.
