They are already in your fuel. They are denser and have higher energy of combustion than pump gasoline. Not toxic as benzene, but perhaps no more toxic than gasoline itself. But you don't have to do this. Others have the option to evaluate engine response to higher octane.
As MTBE (an ether)is phased out more ethanol will be used. This will lower the energy content of the fuel, so you will be getting less mpgs and will have to use more. So the real cost is higher than the sticker price. And these oxygenated fuels do not decrease emissions in a modern engine. The O2 sensor simply calls for more fuel, you use more, and there is no gain in oxygen in the combustion process. High levels of ethanol also increase NOX emissions, but perhaps a good cat will deal with that just fine in its first stage. Chicago is already MTBE free. The other changes to reduce the increased vapor pressure with the ethanol will increase the costs. Higher blends of ethanol cannot be pushed through pipe lines. The ethanol is blended at the fuel terminals. This eliminates water uptake in pipelines and storage. But does nothing about water uptake in tank at the service station.
