Hey,

Been thinking about how to make my car a little quicker for not too much money, and weight savings seems like an obvious choice. My plans are to remove the wooden trunk floor, wooden rear parcel shelf, and the rear seats in my SPG. I want to remake the trunk floor and rear parcel shelf, as well as make a flat peice to go from the cabin floor (behind the front seats) angled up to the rear edge of the parcel shelf. In other words, a flat sheet where the rear seat backs would normally go. I know I am slightly compromising the beautiful interior of the car, but I am going to spend some time on recreating the interior to mimic a 2 seater sports car look, rather than looking like a 4 seater with it's rear seats removed. I may also make tiny flip up cabinets where the seat cushions of the rear seats were, similar to the old Datsuns. Everything will be covered with a thin layer of carpet that looks OEM in color and texture.

I have come down to two choices of materials for the panels I am creating. Either Fibgerglass or ABS plastic. I was thinking carbon fiber or some type of honeycomb material, but I want to keep the costs low, and both of those options aren't cheap! On McMaster.com I found the ABS and Fiberglass in the length and width I need for the project for roughly $50. The thickness is .125" for both materials. The question is, which material to use? I have two 6x9 speakers in my rear parcel shelf, so strength will need to be there, but nothing like carbon fiber or kevlar would be necessary. I really don't want the parcel shelf to bow either, adding metal supports would contradict the weight saving goal. Also, the trunk floor will need to be able to hold up some weight, but nothing that heavy, as I don't use my SPG for hauling much.

Does anyone have any input? Which would be lighter, but still have the strength needed? Should I increase the thickness in either material? Or is there another cost efficent material that could be used here? Sorry for all the questions, but I'm trying to get this right the first time ( :

Thanks in advance!
