She's possibly on the rollers as we speak, more likely tomorrow though.
The first session in which the DI issue was resolved and concluded we had a top end noise with the old ('87 B202, ported to match B212 intake) so it was of no use to try to shoot for HP and risk engine damage, the rollers saw 128.8 kW (175 hp) at the wheels at some point. According to the operator, he did not take it far towards max rpm on full load. As said, there was no point. This was at 0.9 bar boost and without any actual tuning done - she apparently was running lean on cruising and very rich on full load. So I reckoned this was not too shabby...
What things will be like with the new head and intake, no ones knows. The turbo sizing will likely be the limiting factor for top end now - I'm guessing the flow capacity of the unit will be about in the T3/60 ballpark, only geared to high rpm efficiency at the expense of midrange torque (the compressor wheel looks like a Cossie 55 trim jobbie, but with the blades angled differently to aid flow at high engine rpm). The turbo man chose this particular specification after talking to Frank to provide a good balance between responsiveness and top end for a road driven 900. I'm in no doubt that for a straight line kind of car, you could bolt on a GT30BB or similar with a set of auxiliary injectors and get an easy 400+ BHP out of this engine, at the expense of the balance of the overall package.
Basically, the reasoning behind the whole project was to keep peak torque within reasonable limits for the gearbox and FWD traction, and compliment the devastating midrange of the average modified Saab with much better throttle response on- and off-boost, low down tractability and real top end fireworks, making exploiting the 5.5-7K rpm zone a more worthwhile and stimulating experience than before. In other words, it's going to be more of a 'sports' engine...
