Hey Tim,
We bought our 9³ used w/16k miles on it & I decided to run A-Rx now at 50k mi. I don't have any major sludge concerns (I started using Syntec at 20k mi & hve been changing the oil every 10k), so I'm not running a conventional oil for either the cleaning or the rinse. When I got to 2k miles before the end of my current interval, I simply changed my oil filter & added A-Rx to the existing M1 0W-40. Without any existing sludge issues, there's simply no reason to use dino for either the cleaning or the rinse.
If you're set on using a non-syn oil, read thru the last post in the link below. The developer of Auto-Rx posted this on BITOG when some recent confusion surfaced over which oils A-Rx worked with. One comment near the end of the post states, "May I also note that many group III dino derived/refined base oils are marketed as full synthetic. ARX will work great with these as well." This means you can use something like Shell's Rotella T synthetic & get both superior protection & great cleaning.
When everything's done, you can switch back to your favorite syn w/o any worries at all.
