You and royce are one of the reasons i decided to buy another saab and "soup it up" in the first place!
My first love was a 1987 900S, white 4-door. I never had the chance to really do any modifications to it, because it was killed in a horrible accident after about 5 months of owning it....poop
but i had seen your website, and others like it, by then and i decided i wanted another saab! ;)
I tried to buy a 1993 900 turbo convertible in TEXAS, which would have changed my life... but instead the deal went sour, and i decided to buy whatever i could get locally, which was the 1990 9000 turbo that i have today.
I bought it with 90,000 miles on it, for $2000... it had no rust, perfect interior, perfect running engine... and one previous owner i believe... an elderly college professor...
totally worth the money to buy it, but NOT worth the money i put into it...
oh friggin well, hopefully i get some extra cash in the future and get a new car that's already fast, and then spend the rest of this cars days parting it out to people who can benefit from the performance parts...
...who knows... but for now i want to get to like 250HP and then i'll retire! ;)
it's an addiction i tell ya! It's easier to QUIT SMOKING than it is to stop buying saab performance parts, or ANY parts for that matter....
...ok i actaully had a point to this post... what was it... hmmm...
OH YEAH the timing... here's my two cents on that
The engine was assembled by stephen and dave at lesco automotive industries shop in San luis Obispo, California! otherwise know as http://www.GROUP9PERFORMANCE.com
I trust them immensely, and highly dought that the cams are one tooth off, or anything like that.
However, there was a little problem when it came to timing/balanceing the flywheel... what you said about that raised my eyebrows a little bit...
here's what happened...
when my engine was hydrolocked in florida, it already HAD a fidenza aluminum flywheel installed on it.... so as dave was building my engine in california, the flywheel was sitting in my engine in florida. It cost me $500, and i loved it! I wasn't going to shell out another $500 for a new one, or go back to a normal stock flywheel (i think mine is 12 lbs)
the saab dealership in florida didn't want to remove the alum. flywheel from the car, until the engine was THERE so they could start working on it "all at once"
this made sense to me, because as i understand it they would not be able to move the car out of the bay once the flywheel was removed.. and it would just be taking up space...
SO... what i had to do, was wait until the engine was complete, and once it arrived at the saab dealership... they pulled my car into a bay, removed the flywheel and sent it OVERNIGHT to dave in california.
There, dave balanced it with the centerforce dual friction clutch i bought, and sent it BACK to the saab shop, OVERNIGHT...
so let me break this down for you...
12lb flywheel sent from FL to CA overnight UPS = $90
30lb balanced clutch and flywheel sent from CA to FL overnight UPS = $141
having a dual friction clutch and aluminum flywheel? PRICELESS ;)
that was one of the most RETARDED things i've ever had to deal with / pay for... but it was easier to just pay the money at that point and get it over with... as it was like the last bid hurdle of getting the stuff to me from group9 in CA...
anyways.... as you can see, there is some possibility for error when intalling the flywheel and clutch with the rest of the balanced engine.
what kind of mistake could have been made? the timing marks could be off possibly?
One time, i went to a saab dealership up here in NY, with my car as it is now... and they thought the timing might be off... but they checked it and said it was FINE...
...however they might have thought the timing was off because of the custom cam grinds, they didnt listen to me when i tried to tell them that while dropping the car off apparently... so...
... should i just assume the timing is correct since they checked it, and figure they were thrown off by the cams?
or... could this be my problem afterall, and i need to get it re-timed somehow?
AAARRRGGGHHH!
;)
