...and I'm starting to catch them. I did 5 or 6 events last year with my '99 Viggen and I agree with your comments about getting the power to the pavement--it's a real struggle. The first thing to play with is your tire pressures. They should be high enough to keep from rolling over onto the sidewall but low enough to keep a good contact patch. It really depends on track conditions but I found that 40-44 psi front and 36-40 psi rear worked well in most situations last year. I just switched from the Dunlop SP Sport 2000 215/45/17 stock tires to Yokohama AVS Sport 225/45/17 but I haven't autocrossed yet this year (first local event is this weekend).
The thing to concentrate on the most is being smooth, which is a very big challenge. We all learned at the Flight Academy that the quickest drivers are also the smoothest drivers. Take your time and be patient. Learn a good racing line by walking the course several times before the event starts.
I have yet to take a first place in my class (GS with street tires) but my times are typically within a second of the Integra Type-R drivers. Another tough car to beat in the class is the Audi TT.
One other recommendation would be to enroll in an autocross driving class. I'm enrolled in our local SCCA region's two-day class at the end of this month. I'm sure to be humbled there and I expect to learn a great deal.
Remember that it's all about having fun. Don't worry too much about the other drivers just yet--concentrate on improving your skills first.
