You really ought to use a 4-speed shifter. First, with the 5-speed, you'll be missing 3rd gear all the time. Well, that is, if you can even get the 5-speed shifter to properly line up with the coupler. I couldn't, and I have access to all sorts of various combinations of shift rods, couplers, etc. I'm now running a 4-speed shifter with a 4-speed coupler on my 4-speed gearbox. The coupler does use two tapered pins (no pinch bolt), which is a pain, but there is no alignment to deal with. And speaking of alignment, I spent *hours* trying to get a 5-speed shifter to align properly.
Another thing, for me, the 4-speed shifter in my '86 doesn't align perfectly with the shift rod. What I mean by align is that the shifter, when bolted into the car, is positioned such that the shift ball does not line up with the round "cage" in the shift rod; it sits too low. Consequently, shifting either won't work, or works really poorly, and with no reverse. The solution is to shim up the back bolt of the shifter with large washers; this brings the shift ball into proper orientation with the shift rod "cage."
One thing I wished I had was an external centering spring from a early 5-speed...
Last, for those who want a 4-speed, I should point out that they are pretty impractical on the highway if you live where the speed limit is 70 or simply drive a lot of highway miles. Your gas mileage will take a hit and the car ain't quiet. You can apparently get taller primaries, but, well, it's probably not as easy as typing "you can apparently get taller primaries," especially considering they were made in the late *70s*.
Just a couple pennies...
