The most important place for the case to be strong

...is around the right inner driver mounting flange. When we replace a C900 manual transmission due to a broken case, it is always because of a fracture around this area. The extreme torque variation of a jerky launch or abrupt slippage/grippage results in the ring gear trying to escape the tight confines of that portion of the case...and it often does just that.
It is good that the 4-speed case weighs more than the later cases, but the added aluminum really needs to be around the right inner driver/differential area. I suspect that the majority of it is in that flat bottom area, however...not particularly helpful in preventing this type of failure.
chrisx: Did you go to a 4-speed case because of a 5-speed case failure? If so, how (where) did your 5-speed case fail?
