The decline of the dollar may have crapped on this somewhat, but once upon a time $20-25K was enough to get Quaife moving on cooking up a new application.
So the question was one of getting 25 folks willing to put down money up front. Their practice at the time IIRC was that the firm that put in the initial order would get an exclusive distributorship on the first couple batches after which it would go into their 'normal' product catalog through their usual distributors.
I have the second or third Quaife ever made for the Taurus SHO MTX-IV transaxle. I was also one of the first to put my money in. It took Vadim Fedorovsky at the SHO Shop quite a while to get enough orders together - he had my money for a year and a half - but the whole project did come off. There's been a lot of (often valid) criticism leveled at Vadim's business practices, but he did make a lot of things happen that others couldn't or wouldn't.
And Quaife has sold a lot of SHO diffs since then. An absolutely amazing number, especially considering that it's a $1200 diff for what is mostly a $2000 car.
