bearing preload is used on a tapered roller bearing to keep the bearings against the races so they are constantly rolling rather than just the side with the load rolling & the other not making contact? (poor explination) if I could draw a pic it would be easier
so if you set the preload to tight the bearings will run hot too loose & they basicaly fall apart
a pinion bearing set has 2 tapered toler bearings facing each other with an iner race at each end one at the pinion gear side & the other at the nut end if you just tightened it up like you do a wheel bearing & stuck a cotterpin or locked the nut some other way the iner races would not be suported from both sides & this would be a weak setup for this aplication so a crush sleave is a way to keep a spacer between the inner races to suport them while allowing for more easy preload (adjustment of bearings) but a crush sleave is kind of a flimsy suport & a solid sleave is better & most of the heavyer duty difs use them but it is harder to set up the preload corectly this way
I hope this helps somewhat
take care
