I agree, welding cast iron is not a good idea and is very difficult to do well. Taping it will be the best and use a strong magnet to collect the metal chips. Afterwards drain the oil and use a magnet and fush with more oil through the taped hole. Andy E suggestion also sounded like it would work. Best of luck.
