MS, I love the idea. I've also had some experience designing and selling
custom uprated parts for Saabs, so here is my $.02
The project will be expensive, but definitely possible. ANYTHING is possible,
but it takes money. Yes, you can get a custom casting. You can find a higher
strength alloy, or employ better manufacturing methods that were not commonly
available 20 years ago. You can design for the stresses and failures that we
already know about, and reinforce other areas just because.
However, if you ever want any money back, you can't make it just for the
performance crowd. You won't sell more than 3 transmissions at $5k or $6k.
Nobody has the money. For instance, I just checked with Nick at Taliaferro and
he has imported *zero* of the reinforced Speedparts RallyCross transmissions,
and those have been available for 2+ years and cost $5k all said and done.
Now, if you can work up a great design that can be mass-produced (say 1000
units/year) then you can sell this transmission to EVERY SAAB c900 in the
freaking country. This plan will pay back nicely. Nobody would bother with a
crappy factory rebuild that is destined to fail when you can buy the bulletproof
box that will last the life of the car for say $1.5k or $2k.
