Everyone's input has been great! So a reinforced box does exist. 5K is a hefty price for sure. I was thinking no more than $2000. And not necessarily mass produced either. I think I'm going at it from my own DIY POV which is attempting to do nearly everything for next to nothing outside of the time. I mean, I installed a replacement 5 box on my car from below, against some heavy pressure to NOT do it that way. Cost me a full week of efforting (including pulling and prepping the rep box, removing the old and installing the rep) and only $150 for the good used box. As far as what would be necessary for casting a box design goes, I haven't done any real machining, so I suppose that would be costly to have it done right. And my thinking was more along the lines of casting a new box with just strengthening in mind (stronger material), plus some reinforcement here and there. The innards would remain the same, except for perhaps the already available larger pinion bearing. So, just making the hardy box itself and machined ready to go. The rest would be up to those with tranny DIY skills. I wouldn't necessarily do it with making $ in mind, knowing how few would be sold. Maybe just break even over time. All this is theoretical since I haven't looked into any of the costs. I'm just fishing. Never know who might respond: "Hi, I'm a retired metal works master with a basement full of machine tools and I think I can come up with what you're looking for. I'll update as I go along."
