if you measure horsepower at the wheel, the lower weight flywheel if properly balanced will amount in more wheel horsepower. basically, any time you trim the weight off of your rotating components in the engine and/or tranny, you allow the engine horsepower to translate more energy (torque) to the wheels. so, your efficiency increases, resulting in more power being translated from the engine through the transmission and to the wheels. the keuy here is when the engine and tranny are hooked up. the actual engine horse (at the crank, before it goes into the primaries and clutch and then the tranny) doesn't change one iota.
if i could ever finish my my teardown, i'd have something to post about the g9 flywheel unit i got. it is lightened incredibly. for example, stock is 22 lbs giv er take. the lightened fidanza is about 10. and its balanced beyond saab specs, so no worries there. taking that kind of weight out of the rotating assembly will give a noticeable efficiency. the only reason spool up is said to be better is because the engine became more nimble ("light on it's feet") under power, so it probably does spool up quicker. i can't do the math, but several out there in saabland can if you check prev. posts. the numbers have to be better at the wheel.
