Our crank initial balance is showing a need for 250 grams on each end. Seems like a lot. What have you guys experienced on your rebuilds?

The issue is that the Mahle pistons and strengthened conrods from Sweedspeed just weigh more than the original pistons. Is there a better solution to high compression, 92mm pistons than the Mahles? We'd like the engine to spin smooth and fast, and adding weight all over the place (pistons and then crank) seems counterproductive.

So, when you upgrade to Mahle pistons (in our case the 92mm size) they also come with beefy conrods and the combination adds a lot of reciprocating weight. It's hard to balance this on the small crank in the V4 because the counterweights are so thin; you can't drill and fill one big hole, you have to do many in order to get the counterweights up another 250gm front and rear. Takes a day of machine and balance time and costs $1,000 to do. So your $1,000 Mahle pistons are really more like $2,000 installed, but at least the engine will rev to 7000 or 8000! ;-P
