There are different options to take in building a larger displacement V4.
A common option is to utilize aftermarket 'Pinto' pistons where the stock bore is larger than 90mm and there are +.010, .020, .030, etc. available. The Pinto piston deck height is slightly taller than a stock 1.7, and you can mill/deck the block to achieve fairly significant compression ratios. I don't think you need the heavier stronger rods unless you are planning a heavily stressed engine.
I am planning a couple of builds that will be +/- 10 to 1 compression and up to 92+mm bore. These will not be racing engines, but for me to enjoy the driving of a modified vintage Saab. As displacement increases the head performance will be a significant factor with intake and carburetion to achieve relatively high horsepower.
My current plan is for one of these engines to be Pinto +.060 / 1776 cc. with the dual Weber DCOE cross ram carburetion.
