The crank was not refinished as part of the other work. It is no smoother than it was prior to the disassembly. I saw no pitting, scratches, "dents" or other blemishes in it.
The seals do have a series of diagonal ridges and an arrow molded in showing the desired direction of rotation. The crank does rotate in the direction of the arrow. The angle of the ridges is such that the oil weeping under the lip would tend to be pulled back into the sump rather than forced outward.
I suspect the leak to be from the crank to seal contact, not from the seal to block and bearing cap surface due to the location of the trace of oil visible. I expect that leaks from block to seal surface contact would tend to drip straight down off the edge of the oil pan. I see no evidence of oil in these areas. What I see with the engine running is oil coming off the flywheel. Removal of the flywheel shows oil traces emanating radially outward from the crankshaft to seal contact. My diagnosis is that centrifugal force is spinning oil outward.
I'm now wondering if piston blow-by is pressurizing the crankcase enough to push oil out past the seal. The oil fill breather (no PCV) is no more restrictive than before, but who knows?
