I think I've found the solution

It's been a busy afternoon, but I think I found something. I pulled the engine and disassembled it enough to get to the rear seal (practice makes it go much faster).
The cause of my persistant leak may actually have been the rear main cap being out of flush with the block. I previously didn't check the mating of the machined surfaces before tightening it to the requisite 72 lb*ft. As a result the machined surfaces where the rear seal would bottom were not on the same plane. Pressing the seal in allowed it to cock out of perpendicular to the crank axis. This opened a slight gap at the top of the inner lip and a slight gap at the lower part of the outer lip.
At least that's what I'm hoping.
I made certain that the rear cap machined surfaces were flush with the mating surfaces on the block this time
and I added sealant on the outer surface of the seal
and I shortened the inner lip spring a few m.m.
I still need to mount the clutch before putting the engine back in one last time.
If it still leaks then look for the car in the for sale classified section.
