It's not just your humble opinion.  ABS is not designed to shorten stopping
distances in a straight line, but to allow one to brake _hard_ and steer at the
same time, w/out locking the wheels or losing traction. ABS is at its best when
the car is turning and braking, not when, as they misguidedly demonstrated on 60
Minutes years ago, one takes one's hands off the wheel and slams on the brakes
in a straight line.
