If/when a bearing fails you would expect it to make some sound, and then run
for a while.

I have a feeling I replaced a water pump on my 1983 900 (I replaced so many
things) and I have a feeling I got it for UKP30-40 from Edmund's Walker
Motor Factors, alternatively try Partco. Your local Yellow Pages under
Motor Factors will list a few. (There is always a possibility that I am
mistaken and there is no aftermarket pump for a 1988 but somehow I doubt it).

The reaon I mention the two companies above is that they tend to sell better
quality parts and accordingly may be UKP5-10 more expensive for a pump.

If you are not a DIY person, and if you are near London, Ballards of Finchley
give discounts on parts. However, if you take your car in to be fixed the
older the car the more % discount they give on labour (and parts). I
honestly don't see how an original pump gives warning and another does not
(unless it is some kind of Far Eastern import made from compressed grass).

Try this co. for 'some' original parts.

Do you really need a pump?

I thought to EMail you on your first query but the only tip I had was
that you should use a long screwdriver or broom handle to listen what part of
the engine produced more noise.

If you have not already bought a pump, try the following. IT worked for me
every time I thought I needed a pump (which makes me think I might not have
replaced a pump in a SAAB :-)

Replace the belt with a brand new one. I found (and have the belts to
prove it) that the bits on my engine were not 'true' parallel and the belt
tended to have its sides worn every couple of years. The belt as it went
through the pulleys created a sound similar to a failing bearing. New belt
always cured it.

Tighten the belt according to spec. and retighten within a week or 200
miles or so. Too tight a belt will definatelly cause you failed bearings.

Hope it helps.
Charles

PS. I think I'll have to create a web page and stop sending these very long
messages. Sorry gals and guys :-)
