OnStar is not avaliable in Europe, so this frees the input port for usage of the TEL2 telephone option. I believe that Bluetooth is specifically mentioned in the video as the linking mechanism.
I also think this disconnect (pardon the pun) has something with the fact that OnStar is still an analog based audio system. When Saab upgraded the audio systems to digital in 2005, the analog OnStar technology was no longer compatible.
I'm not sure that the omission was intentional on the part of GM, as it likely was a lack of coordination among their various suppliers.
But did GM offer customers an alternative? Of course not!
BTW, it should be pretty simple to change the frequency of the TEL2 phone if GM wanted to do it. Plenty of cellphones have multiple GSM bands that work the world over.
IMO, GM is an arrogant company that holds the wants and needs of its customers in very low regard. Although Saab is having record sales in the US, I fear that they are being slowly strangled by Detroit.
Just my opinion, worth what you paid for it!
