I'm mystified as to why BMW, Audi and Volvo can offer Bluetooth as an option, but Saab can't. I won't compare with the Japanese brands, who cater to their customers far better than any American or European mass market brand.
The 330iC, A4 and S60 are all older models than the 9-3, and have integrated audio systems, trip computers, etc. So it has to be more than just problems with integration.
Also, the factory could offer a dealer installed Bluetooth option for the US market. They did with XM, even though the car is not really engineered for it. This is because they make money selling XM. They can't collect monthly for Bluetooth, but they can sell OnStar. Therefore, no Bluetooth for Americans.
GM/Europe (Opel, Saab, Vauxhall and now Cadillac) is a big enough customer of their suppliers to get whatever they want. It's not like Saab is the only brand using this radio.
The only GM car I could find with a Bluetooth option is the Cadillac STS. To get it you have to buy a $1,000 Bose audio upgrade. On the new Corvette -- not avaliable. Sorry, I'm not buying the technology and cost arguments.
I think it's just discombobulation between suppliers together with indifference to the customer (OnStar), nothing more.
You folks might not believe it, but I actually love my car. It's so frustrating that such simple things are unavaliable because of GM's greed.
