Convertibles: what things to look out for?

A friend of mine finally sees the convertible "fix" he's wanted for years coming in the shape of a 9-3. (I admit to steering him that way...)
So since I have 4 Saabs he asks me which years to look for, as he'll buy used... the newer body style from '04 onward. (he had a '98 NG900 he ran for 150K or so, so he knows he likes Saabs)
While I have a 9-5, two 9Ks and a '99 9-3, I don't know the current generation of 9-3 models at all in terms of mechanical/electrical issues. I know the '03 9-3SS sedans had some issues, but that '04 and later were better, so I'm guessing this applies to the 'vert.
I'll be helping him find a car, so what do we need to be aware of, things to look for, etc. He knows to get service records, etc., but are there any "gotchas" we really need to look for? And he asked me last night if there's a way to raise and lower the top manually if the motor or something else dies. I said I'd find out.
Thanks in advance!
