I own a 00 9-5 Aero w/ ~18000 miles and stay up too late so here goes...
1) Handling vs. ride... I would not have considered the 9-5 at all until the salesman made me drive the Aero! To those with SE's or base 9-5's: It's a good car, just not my cup of tea. Nothing personal. Anyway, the Aero rides very nicely, is not unduly harsh. I even raise the tire pressure a bit and still find it an excellent drive.
2) Speaking about my 2000, I've had NO problems at all. It's been the best new car experience I've ever had. I assume 2001 models are even better and studies are out there to back it up.
3) Value of 2002's. I would love the new seats and an extra 20hp is always welcome but otherwise it's not significant for me. Based on postings of US prices, I'd rather buy a 2001 aero with discounts than a 2002 with minimal discounts
4) No experience
5) The 5-speed tranny is not the best on the market. It can be a bit rubbery but around 10000 miles mine began to loosen up in a very good way. To me, it doesn't really detract from the car very much.
6) No comment about the wagons... I love my 9-5 Aero Sedan.
7) Check recent postings but Canada may be different.
8) Not applicable to me
9) Squeaks, etc... I've had a couple small rattles from my 9-5 but nothing that bothers me. That's what the stereo's volume control is for, right??? ;) Seriously, it has no more or less than my 98 BMW 328i or 96 Saab 900S. Watch for the gas tank 'thump'. If you're sensitive to odd noises, that may bother you. Do a search on this board for 'thump' and you'll find some more info.
I was seeking much the same vehicle. 5 speed, safe, fast, mid-size luxury vehicle, preferably European. The Saab was definitely the right choice for me.
