I've had my 2000 9-5 wagon for a couple of years. I too will be heading back to Japanese. This car is by far the worst purchase I've ever made. And the sad thing is that I bought it based on a CR article.
I am sure that once you sit inside of one, you can't believe all the room and space that it provides, the creature comforts it offers, the acceleration that the turbo engine provides. You probably picture it as being the perfect family car without have to upgrade to an SUV or minivan. That is exactly why I purchased the car.
Besides the required service intervals, in under 100,000 miles, I've replaced: 1) Transmission; 2) Trunk lock; 3) Rear Seat Belt (the seat belt for crying out loud!); 4) Cat Converter; 5) Turbo Igniters; 6) Thermostat. The car has left me stranded at least three times (thank goodness for AAA). To top it off, unfortunately I bought the V6 which required the timing belt to be replaced at 60,000 miles $$$ and at 120,000 miles $$$$. Recently the CEL came on after my 90,000 mile service. Had it checked out, and it was determined that there is a perceived vapor leak. They performed a pressure check, found no problem, and reset the CEL code. However, I am quite certain that that is not the end of the story.
It is my opinion that if you feel compelled to purchase a Saab, buy new. If you buy a used Saab, be sure to purchase a Saab Certified vehicle which comes with the Saab Dealer extended warranty. Do not purchase a Saab without an existing warranty. Should you purchase one without a warranty, be sure to have plenty of money set aside to handle the repairs. This car (particularly used) is not for the poor. Also, as with many European cars, do not drive this vehicle without your cell phone. You may need it. Sorry for the bad news.
