IME, a lot of Swedish design seems to be motivated by not freezing to death. Running out of gas in the OutNorth (I just created a word!) is one way to freeze to death.
The point at which the gauge reads dead empty and the DTE goes to zero is adjustable (or at least was up through '05). Mine read as yours does when I got it. Then I had the car computer reprogrammed to '03 standards to help preserve the DIC, and that seemed to reset the system. Imagine my surprise when I refilled at something under 10 miles DTE and it took 18.6 gallons, not the 16 I was expecting!
Bit of trivia - back in the day, the trainers who drove 9-5s needed to be paranoid about the gauge and DTE, because the calibration can extend to showing miles to go when there aren't any. Once the students discovered that ...
