Used a brake controller for several years successfully, seasonally towing a convertible round trip between Ohio and Florida down I-77/I26/I95.
I connected the wiring to the cable harness that came with the Saab tow hitch. Several of the pins needed to be added into the connector at the dealer, but I suppose you could always splice directly into the cable in the car. Note the amperage rating on the several wires. The switched 30 Amp goes into the controller power, which I wired through a 20 amp circuit breaker per the instructions that came with the controller I used. I think the 30 amp was switched. Maybe a 10 amp circuit I used to maintain charge for an emergency break-away battery.
I strapped the brake controller to the console lid so it would be handy when I was using it and didn't require any drilling or mounting onto the dash.
I used a collection of 4 pole connectors on the brake controller, wiring harness, and tow dolly. I added the brakes to the dolly so there was no comprehensive connector attached to it.
The only issue I had was when I got too cute and decided to connect both the dolly lights and a pair of magnetic lights. First off, the best place to put the lights on the convertible ('06) was made of aluminum, so that was out. Then there was the issue of protecting the paint from the magnetic mounts. Finally I demonstrated that the 4 wire to 3 wire adapters for the trailer lights have the capacity of *one set of lights only.* The car circuit has plenty of capacity, so I just wired in a second adapter (and replaced the original, which was now dead.)
