Trailer brake controller? - trailer brakes

How are people using electric brakes on trailers? If I'm reading correctly the 9-5 wiring (when wired for towing) includes the correct pins, but the converter adapter then goes to a four pin. Do I need to get a brake controller and adapter to tap into those other unused pins? Where have people installed the controller? How are you wiring this in? What amperage can the auxiliary power pre-wired circuit deliver? Anything else to consider? I'd like to attempt this with the minimum amount of modification to the car. I'm not very familiar with this yet as I've used only four pin trailers.
Anyone know if the European loom can be used with US cars? I found the following information.
Wiring info for the connector is as follows:
Pin 1 Left indicator (from DICE)
Pin 2 Rear fog lights (for the monitoring unit, from DICE)
Pin 3 Rear fog lights
Pin 4 Right indicator (from DICE)
Pin 5 Right parking light
Pin 6 Brake lights (from brake light sw via fuse 6B)
Pin 7 Left parking light
Pin 8 Reversing lights
Pin 9 +30 (from fuse A)
Pin 10 +54 (from fuse 6)
You will note there is no ground- it is intended that you bolt a flying lead to the chassis for ground.
There are several cable harnesses available:
400 106 274 for a single 7 pin (https://www.saabdirectonline.com/saab-9-5-7-pin-towbar-wiring)
400 106 282 for a 13 pin
400 106 290 for two 7 pin
