It is a mechanical pump that pumps more air into the engine, making it more powerfull than an engine of its size should be. The pump is driven by an attached turbine, which in turn is powered by car's exhaust flow. There are other ways to produce a similar power gain, such as variable valve timing and lift, increasing compression, etc. Trubocharging has several important benefits:
-- reduced engine size for better chassis dynamics
-- possibility of having low fuel consumption while still enjoying plentiful power on demand
-- reducing or eliminating effects of high altitude on engine power and fuel consumption
-- lower cost compared to other alternatives, such as increased displacement or higher redline
There are almost no disadvantages. Turbocharging use is on the rise, especially in Europe, where high percentage of new cars are turbodiesels.
