I'll give you that spinning the turbine is not "free" If I could get work from a system out without putting work into it, you'd all be posting to "bradnet.com"
Will you agree that the work required to turn the turbo is less than that which is gained by burning additional fuel (in the air provided by the turbo) in the engine?
I think everyone agrees that a turbocharger is a more efficient system than a supercharger, but is turbo more efficient than simply using a larger engine displacement if you run the turbo at full speed all of the time?
Lets say a 2.3L engine is running at 1bar gauge pressure. The amount of oxygen in which to burn fuel available should be equivalent to a NA 4.6L engine, correct? Now, assuming the turbo was running at full capacity all of the time and disregarding the extra drag from 4 additional pistons/valves etc... I would assume that both engines would make similar power and have similar fuel economy.
What do you do for a living Dean? It seems like you know what you're talking about...
