Not to be picky on the terminology, but the driveshaft that Simon S mentioned could be called an input shaft. It is about 5 inches long. Some of the symptoms noted in tz's original post might be as simple as pulling out the input shaft, cleaning the splines, butter up the splines and send it back home. That can all be done through the primary chain cover. If the clutch cover is off, and the input shaft pulled back, you might be able to see with a light and a mirror if the pilot bearing is still amongst the living. Just a thought to keep from having to dismantle the entire mess.....I can't recall if tz had already got that deep into it.
