The more I think about this, the more it "sounds" like a throwout/release bearing.....but Cmyles is probably right again.... You should take off the clutch cover, and have a helper push the clutch in and out while the engine is running making sure you have no loose clothing and nothing can wind itself into the spinning assembly. You can probably see or hear more closely what is wrong.
As I recall, you can't just take out the release bearing -- the entire clutch assembly has to come out. Bentley has a good deal of info and pictures.
