The primary gear splines are right in front, but those are not your target. The splines about 4 inches away are the clutch plate target, and they would be hard to see without a borescope. Once you pull out the clutch shaft you will see if it is clean and slippery, or rusty and crusty....the harder it is to pull it out, the more likely it is "weathered"...
