Sudden clutch loss...details and questions.

Ok...so some of you may know that i recently had a lot of the engine apart. I went no where near the clutch or brake systems...except to have the clutch cover off. Car is back together now after about 3 weeks, and given back to its owner.
4 days go by, and i get a call this morning saying they heard a metal noise like something dropped from the car, and now the trans wont engage. She looked around on the groud for something that fell, but found nothing that looked obvious. I looked too...but didnt see anything besides maybe a big washer...not an auto washer.
I get in the car and test it out...linkage is shifting fine...but the clutch doesnt feel quite right. Not spongey...but not right either. I start the car...out the car in gear...and start to release the clutch...and i can hear that the plate starts to touch the flywheel...but only barely. Just enough to make a little noise...but no movement of the car.
Clutch has always been strong...but always engaged right off the floor. Im reading that may be a bad sign.
1. Does the clutch use the same reservoir as the brakes? If so...there is no visible fluid loss, and the brakes work fine.
2. No visible fluid loss near the slave cyl at the front of the motor...but i havent pulled the cover (car is in street.)
No visible leaks on ground....thoughts?
