I can't remember if it is 15 or 16, but it is set to what it always has been, haven't needed to retard the timing in the past, but I know that is a good way to help the car squeak through.
I'm pretty sure the AMM on the '88 is the same as on the '87, and it is adjustable on mine as well. I'll have to ask the shop on your question (b), but I think they did scope all this out and it seemed ok.
It is just frustrating that the car had always passed just fine, and now even with a new catalytic converter on the car NOx is higher than it ever was in the past. Do you happen to know if different catalytic converters are formulated differently? Is it possible this new Magnaflow cat doesn't have enough 'ingredients' to properly treat the NOx output of a Saab turbo?
Really wish that California had a 25-year rolling emissions policy... they sure make it unpleasant to try and own and preserve a car from the 80s here.
Anyway, appreciate the suggestions!
