It would be more straightforward (and kosher) to go with the original catalytic converter. Problem si with the SPG9/G9 3" exhaust system put on the car 7-8 years ago, a stock-sized cat (2.25"? 2.5?) wouldn't really fit up very well.
I believe the original catalytic converter SPG9/G9 put on these exhaust systems was a Magnaflow, so the idea was just to find a similar one. The 33009 is California compliant (so it has a greater quantity of the cat materials). It is also 3-way, has 3" inlet/outlet, and is the proper length/width to replace what was there.
I'll ask the shop if they tested the AMM/O2 as you say. I guess it could always be that the AMM or O2 have some sort of issue too (even though they are relatively new)?
