How about a fuel filter that is a solid mass inside from neglect?
I found the hard way to replace fuel pumps.....ignore the filter. In a car that had a neglected fuel filter, two pumps gave out trying to overcome the blockage. The car was in a rotten place to get the filter changed, so I bypassed it and the car started right up. Now it starts up with a new pump motor and filter.
