Lots of things could cause your symptoms, make sure it has spark, fuel, air... If it doesn't have a bosch cap and rotor NGK plugs and good cables (Ideally bougiecords), swap all that stuff in first... all cheap and easy so you are known good at that end... many times an off brand cap or whatnot will cause problems like that and there may not be an obvious visible crack or other deterioration.
Basically if this car is in good cosmetic condition and actually rust free for $700, that's pretty good... live with the automatic for a while until it dies. afaik, there were plenty of turbo automatics, and yes, that is harder on the autobox, though my personal opinion is that probably many autobox failures are correlated to lack of fluid changes over their histories... I would do that immediately if you aren't planning to swap in a stick immediately... nobody in their right mind would pull out a stick and put in an automatic, and it would be a whole lot of work to make an NA into a turbo (even LPT seems a fair bit of work)... if they just put a turbo badge on a NA, you can figure that out pretty easily!
look really hard for rust (under the carpets etc, bring along some tools, torx screwdriver set etc)... check the top... other than that, $700 is pretty reasonable unless there's something pretty obviously not good with it...
