I was expecting the bleeding itself ...

to make the clutch line feel hard and solid. That's been my experience in decades past with 99s and earlier 900s. And that expectation seems sensible.
But some in-depth study of the archives here for c900 clutch bleeding suggests a different picture. A lot of people (including Anders) have remarked that a round of pedal pumping is necessary to get the stock firm feel after bleeding the clutch. That pattern seemed to align with what I've been experiencing up to the point when my wheels left the driveway. Then, that firm feel disintegrates a bit and the clutch line falls below operational threshold.
I just tried the feel of the pedal about six hours after the round of bleeding work earlier today. Feels soft (balky forward shifting, reverse is a no-go).
In the earlier frustrating rounds, if I tried to bleed the line after witnessing it soften up on the test drive, I wouldn't get any air (at least I didn't see any).
I was hoping that rubber bellows cover that I skipped installing would be relevant in this problem but in studying how the part works on the old slave, it looks like it would keep the release bearing pressed against the pressure plate fingers but not do much else beyond some dust protection. And comments here in the archives on the subject suggest the bellows piece is not important.
I also already jumped on the idea of a new-part failure in that during the first round of this job, I used a new, out-of-the-box master cylinder and blamed the problems on that unknown-brand (to me at least) part. So I replaced it with an eEuroparts-supplied Sachs brand cylinder. But the results were the same. There's still the slave (but I've got to believe it's only a tiny chance of responsibility).
Is there any relevance in uphill/downhill orientation when bleeding? The end of my driveway has a semi-steep grade (~25-35 deg) and the street in front of my house is also a little steep (~25-35 degrees). I did the early bleeding rounds with the car on the flat section of my driveway. Then did later bleeding rounds with the car facing uphill, then downhill, then back to flat. Noticed no difference.
I'm getting good at bleeding but don't have the results to prove it.
